Service to SEAALL Award Nominations

Do you know someone who has given special service to our chapter? Someone with a sustained record of service through committee and/or board work? If so, then please consider nominating them for the Service to SEAALL award!

To nominate a colleague for the award, please send a nomination letter by March 15 to Beau Steenken, Caroline Osborne, or Kat Klepfer. The letter should specifically address the nominee's contributions to SEAALL and should verify that the nominee has been an active chapter member for at least five years. Please note that current and immediate past SEAALL officers are ineligible for the award.

PLI is delighted to announce the second season of the PLI Ever Current Practising Law Librarian podcast providing timely, valuable information for the librarian community. Each episode features key learnings unearthed and explored through conversations with law librarians from varied backgrounds.

From the beginning, we asked accomplished law librarians what they wish they had known when they began working in libraries, what advice they would give to new librarians, and what key nuggets of wisdom, critical learnings, or book recommendations they wanted to share. During the second season, we also explored library trends, what AI will mean for law libraries and the legal profession, the evolution of legal research and patron needs, and more about the future of libraries.

Join us for fun, engaging discussions including a talk with SEAALL former President Donna Nixon, Electronic Resources Librarian and Clinical Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina School of Law. Fall 2023-24 Student Scholarship

Do you know a student wanting to enter a career in law librarianship? Need money to attend library school?

The Southeastern Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries (SEAALL) Student Scholarships are designed to encourage library school students and graduates to pursue a career in law librarianship. The Scholarship Committee will award grants to the student or students whom the Scholarship Committee determines has indicated a genuine interest in the profession of law librarianship and is likely to pursue a career in law librarianship. Award recipients will also be given a one-year membership to SEAALL.

Statement of Solidarity

Dear SEAALL members,

The Executive Board of SEAALL, the Southeastern Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries, wishes to denounce the unjust, violent deaths of George Floyd, Brionna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black people at the hands of police officers, racist vigilantes, and white supremacists, and the brutal actions taken against peaceful protestors in the weeks that have followed. While libraries are known for being quiet sanctuaries, the leadership of SEAALL will not be silent in the face of injustice. It is the mission of law libraries and law librarians to educate, enlighten, and empower their patrons and fight ignorance, intolerance, and injustice.

SEAALL stands in solidarity with the activists, communities, and other organizations uniting against the epidemic of racism, racial bias, police brutality, and hate-fueled violence targeting minority communities, especially the Black community. Black Lives Matter. We call on all of our SEAALL members to take a stand however they can, professionally and personally, against racism, bigotry, police misconduct, and state-sanctioned violence.

To implement meaningful change, we need to evaluate our libraries’ policies, practices, and procedures for biases, both conscious and unconscious, and inequalities, and create initiatives to help promote racial diversity. We will be working with the Diversity and Inclusion Committee to create a resource page on the website with literature and links to information about diversity and inclusion and cultural competence.
